Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold) as performed by Dan Seals
Written by Dan Seals and Bob McDill
Pink Pig Music(BMI), Polygram Int.Pub.Inc./Ranger Bob Music(ASCAP)
Transcribed by Darragh Egan
from "Dan Seals, Greatest Hits" - Liberty Records, 1991
(Original single released in 1986)

Thanks to George Adams for his corrections.
Special thanks to John Blair for further corrections
and enhancements. I sat on their suggestions so long without modifying my
original transcription (Oct. 1996) that John ended up sending in his own
version. I've blended their suggestions with my own interpretation (I've
got a better ear now than I did in 1996) and arrived at this transcription.
There are only a few minor differences between this and John's version. You
should check his out for the tabs. If you have any comments, questions, or
corrections about the chords in this file you can send them to me. -
Darragh Egan.

Key of E. Capo 2nd fret and play in key of D. 4/4 time.

INTRO:    |D2      |D2/F#      |Bm      A |G         ||

VERSE 1:
         D2           D2/F#        G           D2
Saw your picture on a poster, in a cafe out in Pheonix;
             Bm                   A2         G        G
Guess you're still the sweetheart of the rodeo.
       D2            D2/F#     G                 D2
As for me and little Casey, we still make the circuit
     Bm                A2           G       G
In a one-horse trailer and a mobile home.
    Em              Em               A2       A2
And she still asks about you all the time;
      Em             Em              A2       A[stop]
And I guess we never even cross your mind.

FIRST CHORUS:
             D              D/F#              G               D
But, oh, sometimes I think about you, and the way you used to ride out
        D                    D                 A          [A4]  A
In your rhinestones and your sequins, with the sunlight on your hair;
             D                 D/F#                 G               D
And, oh, the crowd will always love you, but as for me I've come to know
     D                  A           D       [D2&4]  D[stop]
Everything that glitters.... is not gold.

VERSE 2:
          D                 D/F#            G           D
Well, old Red, he's getting older, and last Saturday he stumbled
        Bm                A2              G       G
But you know I just can't bear to let him go.
       D                  D/F#               G              D
Little Casey, she's still growing, and she's started asking questions
            Bm               A2               G      G
And there's certain things a man just doesn't know.
Em                        Em         A2        A2
Her birthday came and you never even called;
  Em             Em                 A2        A[stop]
I guess we never cross your mind at all.

SECOND CHORUS:
             D              D/F#              G               D
But then sometimes I think about you, and the way you used to ride out
        D                    D                 A          [A4]  A
In your rhinestones and your sequins, with the sunlight on your hair;
             D                 D/F#                 G               D
And, oh, the crowd will always love you, but as for me I've come to know
     D                  A           D       [D2&4]  D
Everything that glitters.... is not gold.

BRIDGE:
     Bm              A               G       G
Everybody said you'd make it big someday,
      Bm                 A            G        G
And I guess that we were only in your way.
        D                     A              G          G
But someday, I'm sure, you're gonna know the cost;
          Em             Em                     A2      A[stop]
Cause for everything you win, there's something lost.

FINAL CHORUS (slowly):
             D              D/F#              G               D
But, oh, sometimes I think about you, and the way you used to ride out
        D                    D                 A          [A4]  A
In your rhinestones and your sequins, with the sunlight on your hair;
             D                 D/F#                 G               D
And, oh, the crowd will always love you, but as for me I've come to know
     D                  A           D    [Em D/F#]  G
Everything that glitters.... is not gold, Oooooooooh
     D A[stop] (a cappella, chord would be D on "gold")
Everything that glitters................. is not gold

OUTRO (while whistling melody):

|D2     |D2/F#    |G      |D2
|Bm     |A2       |G      |G

repeat and fade...

The chord fret patterns are:
        EADGBe                EADGBe                EADGBe
---------------------------------------------------------------
D   =   xx0232       D/F#  =  2x0232
D2  =   xx0230       D2/F# =  2x0230       D2&4  =  xx0030
G   =   320003       Bm    =  x24432       Bm/A  =  x04432
A   =   x02220       A2    =  x02200       A4    =  002230
(fret 6th string with thumb to get F# bass note where required)

I like fingerpicking the whole song with an occasional strum to emphasize
chords like the A4 and D2&4 which appear for only a single beat rather than
a whole bar. I also like to use D2 and D2/F# instead of D and D/F# in the
second verse (ie. use the same chords as the first verse), although the
latter is actually correct. I often substitute Bm/A for the A chords in the
first half of the bridge. It's not what's on the recording, but I like the
sound and it's an easy transition (continue holding the Bm, but slide your
barred index finger down off the fifth string to get the A bass note).
